The American actor Edwin Forrest was at the center of New York City's
most notorious clash of classes, the 1849 Astor Place Riot, which
erupted based on a dispute between Forrest and British actor William
Charles Macready. Their rivalry fueled a growing sense of cultural
alienation from Britain among mainly working-class Americans, and
Macready's performance at the Astor Opera House provided an occasion for
a violent skirmish that left about 30 dead and many more wounded. The
riot marked the first time a state militia had been called out and had
shot into a crowd of citizens, and it led to the creation of the first
police force armed with deadly weapons. (#013962) $150.00
