GESSNER, Salomon. THE DEATH OF ABEL IN FIVE BOOKS ATTEMPTED FROM THE
GERMAN OF MR. GESSNER. London: T. Heptinstall, 1797. Quarto (6" x 10")
bound in contemporary tree calf with generous margins; xi, 275 pages.
Illustrated with a portrait, an engraved title page, and six lovely
plates by Thomas Stothard, four of which illustrate the title work and
two that illustrate Gessner's NEW IDYLLS which also includes A LETTER TO
M. FUSLIN ON LANDSCAPE PAINTING and THE TWO FRIENDS OF BOURBON, A MORAL
TALE, BY M. DIDEROT. Joints split with the front cover loose but two
cords holding firm. Spine chipped an inch at the head with loss, less at
heel. Contents lightly aged but clean and fresh. (#003530) $100.00
