TRUMAN, Harry. MEMOIRS. YEAR OF DECISIONS and YEARS OF TRIAL AND HOPE.
Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1955 & 1956. First Edition. Two
volumes. A special and obviously limited edition of this book bound in
full blue cloth with gilt-lettered black spine labels, rather than the
black cloth of the regular and Kansas City editions, and also larger in
size than those editions (6" x 9-1/2"). This edition appears to have
been reserved for the author's use and presented by the President to
those close to him. Each book is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author to
his former Secretary of the Treasury on the half-title pages. The first
volume is inscribed: "To my friend and long/time comrade, John W.
Snyder,/the greatest Secretary of the/Treasury the country ever
had,/with affectionate regards from/Harry Truman/Independence/Dec. 17,
1955." In addition each book is housed in its original slipcase, each of
which the President has also INSCRIBED and SIGNED to Snyder with his
initials, though the ink on the slipcases is badly faded. The second
volume bears a simpler inscription: "To Honorable John W. Snyder/from
his good friend/Harry Truman/5-5-56." Snyder has highlighted a number of
passages with both pen and pencil. He is cited many times in the text.
Tear along gutter of half-title page in first volume, page still very
much intact. Both volumes Fine, original glassine still partly present
on the second volume. Slipcases Very Good with light wear.

Snyder was appointed U.S. Secretary of the Treasury in 1946 by his close
personal friend President Harry S. Truman, with whom he had served in
World War I. He developed programs to promote greater efficiency within
the Treasury Department, including a streamlining of the Internal
Revenue Service, which assured a more impartial administration of tax
laws, and a reform of the federal accounting system. Snyder resigned at
the end of Truman's second term. (#015316) $8,500.00
