For Sale: Rare book on Japanese plant dyes
 
Yamazki, Akira. Monograph of Plant-Dyeing Peculiar to Japan (Nippon
Kusakizome-Fu). Kanagawa, 1961. 11 x8 inches. Handwoven silk over boards,
endpapers dyed with suo, 78 pages, in cloth folding slipcase. No. 120 of 500
copies. Preface in English, text in Japanese; index (Latin botanic names).
Color woodblock print , "Ai no Zu," by Edo-Kanoo; also an actual specimen of
the akanegusa plant; 50 mounted skeins of dyed silk showing the colors
achieved. A gorgeous book in about new condition. 
500 copies, printed on heavy handmade nihonshi (2-layered washi) made
especially for this book. Text describes  the special dye process using the
pigment and tannin in plants. There are 65 photographic illustrations of the
plants used. These dyes were also used to color paper. Yamazaki published a
similar book in 1933 (see Hunter, Papermaking Bibliography.)   very scarce
$550 ppd.
