LUTHER, MARTIN. NEU VERMEHRT UND VOLLSTAENDIGES GESANG-BUCH: ZUR UEBUNG DER GOTTSELIGKEIT, IN 750 PSALMEN UND GESAENGEN . . . Philadelphia: Ernst Ludwig Baisch, 1774.
12mo, in custom box ; heavy parchment covers with two intact clasps, all edges still brightly gilt with ornaments stamped at each corner, moderate rubbing, portions of spine missing & repaired, marbled paste-down end papers (only) in the German fashion, Pa.-German birth records on front blanks dated 1790 to 1804, name of Johann Heinrich Zaug on rear blank, frontispiece. Both covers have a colored design: potted flower within vined arches; heart below reading "Singet und spielet dem Herrn in eurem Hertzen"; fountain above; corner flowers; outer frame. The spine features tulips within the raised bands. These unique and rare bindings on Baisch's books are discussed by Goff in the Gutenberg-Jahrbuch 1968, in which he makes the case that the bindings were done in Germany. The covers of the present copy are illustrated in his figure 2, p.326, but the spine design in this copy of tulips (a favorite Pa.-German design motif}, is different. OCLC lists copies at the AAS, Clements Library, and Wittenberg & Goettingen Universities, & Goff mentions several others. RARE.
