Originally published in 1953 by Eric Gill's brother, Evan, this book is based on new research conducted at the University of San Francisco and the Clark Library in Los Angeles and increases the original entries by one third. FIRST EDITION.  The Victoria and Albert Museum holds more than 1,000 engravings on wood or metal of Eric Gill, the most comprehensive holdings extant; this volume is the first to list them all in chronological order with bull bibliographical references.

LIMITED EDITION of 1,350 copies of the Ordinary Edition.  A Special Edition of 85 copies was issued at the same time in two volumes bound in morocco and containing a portfolio of 8 loose engravings pulled from the original blocks.  This book adds 81 entries to the Victoria and Albert Catalogue of 1963, which lists 993 numbered entries of Gill engravings.  At least one state of every pictorial block in the Victoria and Albert Catalogue has been included.

LIMITED EDITION of 300 copies, this is number 45.  A Tally of Types was first circulated in a privately printed edition in 1953.  Though only a few copies were distributed, it became widely influential and achieved a degree of fame among aficionados of type design.  In 1973, Cambridge University Press published a version edited and expanded by Brooke Crutchley and others, in paperback, hardback in dust-jacket, and this limited edition format in slip case; the last two appear on-line with the same ISBN.  A Tally of Types is a historical, critical and functional account of the types cut under Morison's direction in the 1920s and early 1930s during a typographical revival conducted by the Monotype Corporation.  This copy is as fresh as the day it was issued.

LIMITED EDITION of 70 copies privately printed, handset in Lutetia type, on Whatman paper.  One of a few copies bound in the fleur-de-lis cloth.  The introduction was written by Herbert L. Rothchild, the descriptive matter was written by Robert Grabhorn.  The text highlights nine English, six Continental, and four publications from San Francisco, of exceptional works produced by private presses in the 1920s.  Opposite the text is a facsimile of the presswork under consideration.  The text includes historical and technical data about the various presses and the individual works.  The facsimile pages have been hand colored by Valenti Angelo.  An elegant presentation of some of the world's most sumptuous books printed in the 1920s.
