TITLE: “Ivories de la Renaissance et des Temps modernes. La collection du
musee du Louvre”

Bu Philippe Malgouyres.
published in Paris by the Musee du Louvre in 2010.

DISCUSSION: “Through the Louvre's rich collection of ivories - over three
hundred pieces, many of them reproduced here for the first time - this
book presents a history of ivory carving in Europe. Many of these works
have a prestigious provenance, having once belonged to Louis XIV,
Marie-Antoinette or Madame de Pompadour. Modest or sumptuous, some of them
were created to commemorate historic events such as the coronation of the
Emperor Napoleon, the marriage of a princess of the house of Saxe or
Napoleon's German campaign. Built up with patience and passion by such
notable nineteenth-century collectors as Pierre Revoil, Charles Sauvageot,
Adolphe Thiers and Baronne Salomon de Rothschild, the collection also
delineates a history of changing tastes and fashions - as well as, on
occasion, the errant ways of science. It also comprises a great variety of
forms and functions, from reliefs, statuettes, fans, knives and weapons to
vases embellished with gold mounts and curiosities, and includes work from
Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Japan, Africa and Mexico. This catalogue, fully
illustrated throughout, documents this unique collection in its entirety
for the first time”.
