MAUGHAM, W. Somerset. OF HUMAN BONDAGE. Garden City: Doubleday, Doran,
1936. First Edition. The First Trade Edition of the First Illustrated
Edition of this famous book. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the
front free endpaper: "For James W. Poling/to whose labours I owe many
happy hours/W. Somerset Maugham." Poling was an author of several books,
including THE FINAL FACE OF EVE with Evelyn Lancaster, and an editor at
Doubleday, Doran, one it appears who worked on Maugham's books. Perhaps
Maugham's greatest effort, OF HUMAN BONDAGE was made into a film in 1934
starring Bette Davis in her breakout performance. It was remade in 1946
with Eleanor Parker as the manipulative Mildred Rogers and again in 1964
with Kim Novak as Mildred. This edition came out twenty years after the
book's success and is graced with illustrations by Randolph Schwabe.
There was a limited signed edition of this book issued simultaneously
with this trade edition. We have had many copies of it over the years,
but we have never come across a trade edition inscribed by Maugham, let
alone one with such a fine inscription. Spine sunned. Very Good, lacking
the dustwrapper. (#011720) $2,500.00
