John Dryden: The Comedies, Tragedies, and Operas Written by John
Dryden, Esq; Now first Collected together, and Corrected from the
Originals. In Two Volumes. London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, at Gray’s-
Inn-Gate in Gray’s-Inn-Lane; Thomas Bennet, at the Half-Moon; and
Richard Wellington, at the Lute in St. Paul’s Church-Yard, MDCCI
[1701]. FIRST EDITION. Two volumes, folio (35.5 x 22 cm); [6], 618 p.;
[2], 308, 261-558 p. ESTC T143003; Macdonald 107a i.
A mismatched set, externally rough, lacking frontispiece, but contents
generally clean and sound... Hardly immaculate, but a fundamentally
solid example of what appears to be the first issue of the first folio
collected edition of Dryden's works (five other variants were
published in the same year). Well worthy of a binding overhaul. A
handsomely printed production with bold, crisp type marching across
spacious leaves with ample margins. A glorious way to read Dryden, if
one's lap is sturdy enough.
