[William King:] Some Remarks on the Tale of a Tub. To which are
Annexed Mully of Mountown, and Orpheus and Euridice. By the Author of
The Journey to London. London: Printed for A. Baldwin in Warwick-lane,
1704. FIRST EDITION. Modern wraps with printed labels; 8vo (19 x 12.5
cm); [10] + 63 + [1] pp.; with the half-title, but lacking the
terminal leaf of publisher's adverts; ESTC T49383; Teerink 997.
One of the very earliest (and least common) examples of "Swiftiana,"
in which the Irish satirist William King comments on The Tale of a Tub
and slyly muses on the identity of its author. Also included are two
burlesque poems, "Mully of Mountown" and "Orpheus and Euridice." King
(1663-1712), though holding the impressive titles of judge of the
admiralty and keeper of the records at Dublin Castle, was far more
interested in turning out satires, burlesques and miscellanies. A
high church Tory, he was also a convivial fellow and notorious
drinker. Pope once said of him: "I remember Dr. King would write
verses in a tavern three hours after he could not speak".

Some toning to the leaves, darkening to the edges, light foxing to 2-3
leaves; ink library stamp on the last page of ads (no other library
markings); small chips from the top edge of the first four leaves;
otherwise clean and sound, firmly bound in modern wraps. A solid copy.
