TITLE: “Les Confreries Religieuses Musulmanes”

By Octave Depont & Xavier Coppolani.
Published in Algeria by Adolphe Jordan in 1897.

DISCUSSION: “Publie sous le patronage de M. Jules Cambon, Gouverneur
General de l’Algerie”. The original edition of this comprehensive and
extremely important study of Muslim Brotherhoods in the Saharan area to
the end of the 19th century. The text includes material on Arabs before
Mohammed, the origins of Sufism, the organization of Muslim brotherhoods,
their financial and political systems, and information on individual
brotherhoods by locality. The illustrations include 4 magnificent
chromolithographed plates. A folding map was issued to accompany the
study, which is not present.  French text.

DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8”x11.5”, xxvii + 576 pages, black & white
illustrations and four chromolithographed plates (1 folding).

CONDITION NOTES: Lacks the folding map. Original softcovers bound into new
cloth. Moderate scattered internal soil, some wear, slight rips along
edges. Used but not abused.
