> Taking place inante-bellum Missouri.  Roxy a slave of mixed blood, and could pass for white switches her child with the child of her master to protect him from the horror of slavery. The child becomes a spoiled, cruel and shiftless, while the 'master's' child, growing up as slave. Excellent character studies reflecting Twain's' disdain for slavery and human classification. Originally published in Century Magazine in installments (December 1893 to June 1894) . This tale that began while Mark Twain was in Italy, inspired by the Italian Siamese Twins "Lugi and Angelo Capello". Red illustrated boards and spine. First Edition BAL 3441, stamped with three characters from the novel, gilt lettering to spine and illustration. Frontispiece and title page are conjugates printed on coated paper, otherwise printed on uncoated wove paper. Six additional inserted plates. List of Mark Twain's works to the verso of half title. Publishers catalog to rear dated September 1894. Rubbing of extremities, with few rubbed through spots to rear joint, light soil, with few small light damp stains. Slight lean to front board. Spine sunned, professionally re-backed, chipping to rear joint, and  ends  Hinges cracked, text block firm. Two scuff marks to paste down, previous owners name and partial date.  Brown 1' inch stain to half title, page 119 faint stain to lower edge, text very readable, page 151 short closed edge tear. Tight in covers. All plates present,  bright text.
