TITLE: “Rex Battarbee. Artist and Founder of the Aboriginal Art Movement
in Central Australia”

By T.G.H. Strehlow.
Published in Sydney by The Legend Press in 1962. 2nd printing.

DISCUSSION: An award-winning watercolorist of the Australian landscape in
his own right, Rex Battarbee is also credited with helping to start the
Aboriginal Art Movement in central Australia by providing art supplies and
training to pioneer aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira. Namatjira, who
lived at the Hermannsberg Mission, south-west of Alice Springs, “was the
first Indigenous Australian watercolourist as well as the first to
successfully exhibit and sell his works to the non-Indigenous community.
Namatjira's style of work was adopted by other Indigenous artists in the
region beginning with his close male relatives, and they became known as
the Hermannsburg School or as the Arrente Watercolourists.”

DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 7.5”x10”, 48 pages, 14 color plates and a black &
white portrait, dust jacket.

CONDITION NOTES: Jacket soiled a bit and lightly chipped (please see the
photos). Inscribed by Battarbee on the half-title. Minor wear, but
otherwise clean and nice, with a tight binding and no marks.

PRICE: $75.00
