Ogawa, Kazuma. ILLUSTRATIONS OF JAPANESE LIFE. Described by S.
Takashima. Reproduced and Published by K. Ogawa. Yokohama: Kelly and
Walsh. 1896 (title leaf & preface dated May 28, 1896). Folio (14-1/4"
tall). (4)pp. Plus 96 unnumbered collotype plates heightened with hand
coloring, with descriptive text. Complete (see below). Ornate Japanese
style colored silk brocade binding, each cover with an inset color
woodblock illustration printed on silk. Stabbed & tied at inner margin,
with purple silk tassels. A.e.g. An about fine copy.    $2,500.00
This is the first edition of this famous work by Ogawa, one of Japan's
foremost photographers at the turn of the century. There are a number
of variants of this folio edition, as well as differences found in the
actual images in each. Another version with the 1896 date on the
title-page has plates which are numbered 1-100. A later folio reprint
(no date on the title-page) has 97 plates. This work was presented as a
deluxe souvenir for the English speaking travelers who visited Japan in
the 1890s.
