HERBERT, Sir Thomas. SOME YEARES TRAVELS INTO DIVERS PARTS OF ASIA AND
AFRIQUE. DESCRIBING ESPECIALLY THE TWO FAMOUS EMPIRES, THE PERSIAN, AND
GREAT MOGULL: WEAVED WITH THE HISTORY OF THESE LATER TIMES. AS ALSO,
MANY RICH AND SPATIOUS KINGDOMES IN THE ORIENTALL INDIA, AND OTHER PARTS
OF ASIA; TOGETHER WITH THE ADJACENT ILES. SEVERALLY RELATING THE
RELIGION, LANGUAGE, QUALITIES, CUSTOMES, HABIT, DESCENT, FASHIONS, AND
OTHER OBSERVATIONS TOUCHING THEM. WITH A REVIVAL OF THE FIRST DISCOVERER
OF AMERICA. London: Jacob Blome & Richard Bishop, 1638. Second Edition.
Published in the same year as the First Edition, this edition revised
and enlarged. Tall quarto (7" x 11") beautifully bound in full recent
sprinkled calf with five raised bands, gilt spine decorations, and a
gilt-lettered red morocco spine label; [viii], 364, [14] pages.
Illustrated with an engraved title page before the letterpress title
page and 43 copper engravings of varying sizes in the text including 5
maps (Madagascar, the Persian Empire, India, South-East Asia, and the
Bay of Mauritius) and numerous figures of people, views, and animals,
our favorite being the fanciful shark consuming an unfortunate
individual. In addition to the places mentioned, Herbert also devotes
pages to Japan, China, Borneo, Mauritius Island, and even America. Three
text leaves are lacking: C4, Dd1, and Dd4; H3 has a neat tear, about
three inches, taped at the margin. The engraved title page and the last
leaf of the index have been laid down on stiffer paper with little loss.
The binding is perfect and handsome. But for the three pages, a Near
Fine copy of an interesting book. $1,900.00
