This book generated a term unique to Ecuadorian Spanish-- "bemelmans": a
foreigner who makes fun of the natives.

BEMELMANS, Ludwig. THE DONKEY INSIDE. New York: The Viking Press, 1941.
First Edition. A notebook of several voyages through South America, with
a concentration on Ecuador. Copy #22 of only 175 numbered copies with an
ORIGINAL DRAWING in color SIGNED by the author, in this case a view of a
church nestled among hills. Certainly the most affordable way to obtain
an original work of art by the author of MADELINE. Small, interesting,
and colorful bookplate on the front pastedown below a crossed-out
owner's name.Slight soiling to the cloth. Near Fine, lacking the
slipcase. $400.00
