Memoirs of Samuel Pepys, Esq., F.R.S., Secretary to the Admiralty in
the Reigns of Charles II and James II, Comprising his Diary from 1659
to 1669, Deciphered by the Rev. John Smith, A.B. From the Original
Short-hand MS. in the Pepysian Library, and a Selection from his
Private Correspondence. Edited by Richard, Lord Braybrooke. London:
Henry Colburn, 1825. FIRST EDITION. Two large 4to volumes (30.5 x 24
cm; 12 x 9.5 in), bound in half navy morocco and green buckram; pp.
[2], xlii, 498, [2], xlix; [ii], 348, [2], vii, [1, blank], 3-311,
[1]; half-title in vol. I; 13 engraved plates (1 folding) and 2 in-
text engravings.

The first edition of the most famous diary in the English language and
the key historical record of Restoration London. Complete with all
thirteen plates, one of which is folding. Ink stamps of the London
Institution (1806-1912) on the plates, title-pages and last pages of
text (no other library markings); modest wear to the edges/corners of
the bindings; interior hinges partly cracked but boards are sound and
secure; offsetting from the plates as usual, occasional mostly light
scattered spotting and toning; otherwise clean and sound, firmly
bound. A solid copy of this landmark of history and literature, one of
the "Grolier English Hundred.".
