CARTER, Jimmy. WHY NOT THE BEST? Nashville, TN: Broadman Press, (1977). 
The Presidential Edition, issued without dustwrapper in a gold box 
(lacking here) and bound in full gilt-decorated green cloth made to 
resemble leather. Illustrated with drawings and photographs. A limited 
edition of Carter's first autobiography, first published in 1975 in a 
trade edition in dustwrapper when Carter was campaigning for the 
Presidency. SIGNED by the author "Best Wishes,/Jimmy Carter 4-83" on the 
front free endpaper. Above Mr. Carter's inscription the book is also 
SIGNED by his mother: "With good wishes/to you & your 
family--/Sincerely/Lillian Carter. 1/23/78" and as such is quite 
uncommon. The President's full signature also appears on the title page, 
but this is printed in every copy. Also on the bottom half of the front 
free endpaper is the owner's name and address dated 1977 before Jimmy 
and Lillian Carter signed the book. Offsetting to final text page from 
newspaper clipping with a small area of sticky adhesion opposite on the 
recto of the rear free endpaper. Minor bump lower front corner. Near 
Fine.         $400.00

blacked out on the title page. Issued without dustwrapper in a gold box 
with a plastic cover and bound in full gilt-decorated green cloth made 
to resemble leather. Illustrated with drawings and photographs, 
including many in color. A limited edition of Carter's first 
autobiography, first published in 1975 in a trade edition in dustwrapper 
when Carter was campaigning for the Presidency. This copy is INSCRIBED 
to ---- and SIGNED by the author as "Jimmy Carter" on the front free 
endpaper and is also INSCRIBED "Best Wishes" and SIGNED by Rosalynn 
Carter. The president's full signature also appears on the title page, 
but this is printed in every copy, despite what some of our more 
unscrupulous and/or uninformed colleagues say. Book Fine, essentially 
new, lacking the box.         $200.00
