(INCUNABULA) Augustine, Saint. OPUSCULA. Parma: Angelus Ugoletus. 31
March 1491. Folio. Roman type. ff.306, the last leaf blank. Full modern
calf in antique style, preserving on later front blank fly-leaf the
armorial bookplate of H.R.H. the Duke of Sussex (1773-1843), sixth son
of George III of England and noted bibliophile. Early repair to blank
foot of second leaf, several small wormholes to first and last leaves
that do not affect legibility, and some contemporary marginalia. A very
large example with some uncut edges. $7,500.00 (trade discount
allowed)
One of the earliest books from this press, it is preceded only by a
book printed in 1487, and perhaps one undated work. Many of St.
Augustine’s most important doctrines are outlined in the smaller works
in this collection. His GRAMMATICA, RHETORICA and DIALECTICA, for
example, are among his earliest writings. His important work on the
immortality of the soul is here as well as his writings on monastic
life. His friend and disciple Possidus wrote the lengthy VITA SANCTI
AUGUSTINI, the earliest biography of Augustine. This collection is the
first to be edited by Eusebius Conradus and Thaddaeus Ugoletus, with
additions by Severinus Chalcus. Hain-Copinger 1952; GKW 2867; Goff
A-1220. BMC VII, 944. Rare.
