[Jean Le Clerc:] Parrhasiana: or, Thoughts upon several subjects; as,
Criticism, History, Morality, and Politics. By Monsieur Le Clerk,
under the feigned Mame of Theodorus Parrhasi. Done into English by
****. London: [s.n.]. Printed for A. and J. Churchil, at the Black
Swan, in Pater-Noster-Row, 1700. FIRST EDITION. Bound in period
paneled calf, possibly rebacked at a later date, gilt-stamped spine
label; [8], 288, 281-304 p. ESTC R16664; Wing L823.
First English translation of the essays and pensées of the
encyclopedist and radical theologian Jean Le Clerc. An early/
contemporary owner has identified the translator as a "D. Miller" in
ink on the title-page and the spine label reads "Miller's
Parrhasiana." However, ESTC makes no such attribution; no attribution
at all, in fact. The identity of the translator appears to be a
mystery, though it is known that the work appeared in English "almost
at once" after Le Clerc sent a copy of the French version to his
friend John Locke.

Hinges professionally repaired; previous owner's signature on the
title page; later light penciled notes on the front free-endpaper,
leaves lightly toned; otherwise quite clean and crisp, firmly bound. A
handsome copy.
