[CATT, Carrie Chapman] THE NATIONAL AMERICAN WOMAN SUFFRAGE ASSOCIATION.
VICTORY. HOW WOMEN WON IT. A CENTENNIAL SYMPOSIUM 1840-1940. New York:
The H. W. Wilson Company, 1940. First Edition. The Honor Edition, copy
#153 of 300 numbered copies. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Carrie Chapman Catt
below the limitation statement: "To Mrs. William Allen White/from
the/National American Woman/Suffrage Association/Carrie Chapman
Catt/November 26, 1940." Carrie Chapman Catt (1859-1947) succeeded Susan
B. Anthony as President of the National American Woman Suffrage
Association in 1900 and played an essential role in bringing about the
passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920, the same year she founded
The League of Women Voters. Presumably issued without a dustwrapper as
this is a Fine copy in a close to Fine example of the original box.

The recipient of this inscription was married to William Allen White, a
renowned Kansas newspaper editor, politician, author, and leader of the
Progressive movement who became the iconic spokesman for middle America.
His autobiography, which was published posthumously, won a 1947 Pulitzer
Prize. Their son, William L. White, was the author of THEY WERE
EXPENDABLE which was made into a film by John Ford starring Robert
Montgomery and John Wayne. (#016103) $850.00
