MAGOUN, Jeanne Bartholow. THE LIGHT. New York: Mitchell Kennerley, 1923.
First Edition. Cloth-backed boards; 63 pages. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by
the author on the front endpaper in 1915. A short epistolary novel in
which Elizabeth, evolving through the book in her understanding of the
rights of women, writes to anti-suffragist Alice. An example: "I wish I
knew some way to tell you what all this meant to me. It isn't just the
vote. It's all that it stands for, and all that woman will become when
she gets out of the attitude toward the men that has come down to us
from the cave-dwellers. I believe as firmly as I believe anything, that
giving the franchise to women will be a great big push toward that end.
In all times some woman has seen the light and gone ahead to lead other
women to a greater dignity." Rubbing to much of the white lettering on
the spine; otherwise, Near Fine, lacking a dustwrapper if one existed.
(#016104) $50.00
