THIMM, Carl A.  A Complete Bibliography of Fencing and Duelling, As Practiced by All European Nations From the Middle Ages to the Present Day.  London and New York: John lane, The Bodley Head, 1896.  Thick 8vo.  9 ¾ x 7 ½ inches.  xvi, 538, [2] pp.  Half-title, frontispiece portrait of the author, decorative title page printed in two colors, illustrated throughout with portraits, title-pages, frontispieces, and illustrations on plates from the original books, index, and an appendix of over 100 pages of notes on fencing & duelling from the contemporary press; text unmarked, there are occasional library blind and perforated stamps but these are confined to the margins of the pages and plates.  Brick red buckram with gilt-titled spine; binding square and tight.  Ex library copy with perforated stamp on the title with rubber stamps, and notations on the copyright page, but these minimal.  Great working copy.

SECOND EDITION, revised and enlarged.  Carl Thimm’s bibliography presents every published book he could find, divided by country and date.  The first edition was translated into French and German, the revised edition was the most complete compilation on the subject up to its time.  Despite duplication or incorrect listings, Thimm’s work remains as a primary resource on the subject.
