Greetings Booklovers,

We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 1707 ) Waring, Robert L[ewis]. AS WE SEE IT (SIGNED).
Washington, D.C.: C. F. Sudwarth, 1910. First printing, Full leather,
Octavo, 233 pages, Black & white frontispiece photograph. Fine.
Scarce novel written by an African American, dealing with the conflict
between "the educated negro" and uneducated white "crackers" in the
post-Civil War South. Waring predicted that his race would leave the
Southern white man far behind in a few generations, asking: "Was there ever
a large business of any character, a store, a bank, an insurance company, a
school, college, or what not, organized and built up, controlled by a man or
woman who sprang from the 'cracker' element of this country? Hundreds of
such enterprises are owned and controlled by Negroes who were slaves." This
copy INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Waring on preliminary blank thus "Presented to
Miss V. Virginia Warren, / by the author (a policeman) / Robert Lewis Waring
/ at Washington, D.C. / March 19th 1910". This copy professionally rebound
in full leather with original leather front cover laid down. Gilt spine
title, original gilt titles on upper board, original owner's bookplate (Mrs.
Virginia W. Brooks) laid down on new front pastedown....... $300.00
