No date (ca. 1680?). Folio (18" tall). 2 parts in 1. ff.(1),75;(1),31.
Engraved title pages, with ornamental border, to each part, plus a total
of 106 engraved plates, many with descriptive engraved text. It
includes 15 double-page plates in the second part. Cont. calf, finely
rebacked with the original gilt spine with red morocco label, laid
down. A few plates with an old worm hole at bottom blank margin
restored. Double-page plate 20 (in the second part) has a partial
(minor) loss at the lower left corner, finely restored. The loss is
about a 2" x 1/2" portion along the bottom margin of the engraved
plate. Overall a very nice copy with wide margins and strong
impressions of the plates. With a cont. engraved bookplate and the ink
signature of J. A. J. Rotthier.	$3,250.00 (trade discount allowed)
A great work on French homes and buildings including chateaus and
townhouses in the 17th century with detailed plans and considerable
explanatory text. The book first appeared in 1623 with Part 1 only,
next was the 1647 edition, followed by an edition dated 1664. Both of
these editions have a total of 84 plates. Only our undated edition and
another (Paris: Francois Jollain. 1681) have all of the supplementary
plates bringing the total number to 106 (plus the 2 engraved titles),
in effect, the most complete of all the editions. This edition not in
Fowler or Millard (see # 94). "The importance of the MANIERE as a
reference book cannot be overestimated. It was the only handbook of its
kind published for about one century" (Millard, FRENCH BOOKS p. 261).
