[Rarebooks] FS: A few new Limited Editions Club acquisitions

1.  COLETTE. BREAK OF DAY. New York: Limited Editions Club, 1983. Quarto 
(9" x 11") bound in pongee silk woven in China and dyed deep blue to 
match the color of the silk-screen illustrations. Translated by Enid 
McLeod with an introduction by Robert Phelps. Copy #1168 of 2000 
numbered copies illustrated with three full-page silk-screen plates and 
nine in-text vignettes by Francois Gilot, former lover of Picasso and 
mother of two of his children and later the wife of Jonas Salk, 
developer of the anti-polio vaccine. SIGNED by the artist on the 
colophon page. Monthly Letter laid in. Spine sunned. Near Fine in a Fine

2.  CONRAD, Joseph. HEART OF DARKNESS. New York: Limited Editions Club, 
1969. Tall octavo (7-1/8" x 10-7/8") bound in half ivory-toned imported 
English sheep vellum and boards decorated by the illustrator with "an 
African Negro mask through which can be discerned a pair of Caucasian 
blue eyes." Introduction by Leo Gurko; designed by Richard Ellis. 
Illustrated in color by Robert Shore and SIGNED by the artist on the 
colophon page. Outside of the total of 1500 copies, this copy is one of 
15 presentation copies with the Club's blindstamp stating such and has 
the initials "H. M." written in ink in place of a number. We are unsure 
of the recipient's identity. Monthly Letter laid in. Fine in a Fine

3.  DICKINSON, Emily. THE POEMS OF EMILY DICKINSON. New York: Limited 
Editions Club, 1952. Tall octavo (7" x 10-3/4") bound in full top-grain 
black sheepskin with a morocco grain and the title stamped in gold leaf 
on the front cover and spine; 320 pages. Each sheet is printed in black 
and brown. Selected and edited with a commentary by Louis Untermeyer. 
Illustrated with pen drawings by Helen Sewell. Copy #1087 of 1500 SIGNED 
by the artist on the colophon page. Spine quite rubbed with some of the 
leather rubbed off and the color retouched; no chipping or tears and the 
rest of the book quite nice. Very Good in a Good, intact slipcase badly 
pitted on the back and top edges. (#016107)        $150.00

4.  DURRENMATT, Friedrich. OEDIPUS. [New York]: Limited Editions Club, 
(1989). First English Edition. Folio (10-3/4" by 14-1/2") handsewn and 
quarter-bound by hand with burgundy Nigerian Oasis Goatskin on the spine 
and natural linen boards; xv, 41 pages. This First English-language 
edition of Durrenmatt's version of the Oedipus myth has been translated 
by Leila Vennewitz and includes a foreword by the author. Illustrated 
with two fine photogravures by Marie Cosindas. Copy #78 of 650 numbered 
copies SIGNED by the photographer and the author on the colophon page. 
Monthly Letter laid in. Fine in a Fine cloth slipcase with suede lining.

Club, (1987). Large octavo (7" x 10-1/4") hand-sewn and hand-bound by 
Carol Joyce in full white parchment with yapp edges. Translated by Willa 
and Edwin Muir. Illustrated with four lithographs by Michael Hafftka 
printed on hand-made Japanese paper. Copy #78 of 800 numbered copies 
SIGNED by the artist on the colophon page. Fine in a Fine clamshell box.

6.  WILLIAMS, Tennessee. A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. New York: Limited 
Editions Club, 1982. Folio (8" x 12-1/2") bound in burgundy aniline 
leather-backed cloth, hand-printed in 13 colors, imported from Italy. 
Copy #1168 of 2000 illustrated by Al Hirschfeld with two-color drawings 
and an ORIGINAL FOUR-COLOR LITHOGRAPH for the frontispiece. SIGNED by 
the illustrator on the colophon page. Monthly Letter laid in. Tasteful 
bookplate on the front pastedown; touch of rubbbing to the heel of the 
spine. About Fine in a Fine slipcase. (#016123)        $375.00
