[George Pearch, ed.]: A Collection of Poems, in Four Volumes by
Several Hands. London: Printed for G. Pearch, and sold by Joseph
Johnson, St. Paul’s Church-Yard, 1775. First edition thus. Four
volumes, 8vo, bound in full period polished calf with gilt-tooled
spines and morocco spine labels; complete with all four half-titles,
indexes, copper-engraved vignettes to title-pages and first pages of
text; last volume with errata leaf and leaf of publisher's adverts.
ESTC T95888.

As stated on the half-title pages: A collection of poems; consisting
of valuable pieces, not inserted in Mr. Dodsley’s collection, or
published since. With several originals, by eminent writers. Pearch's
collection, first published in two volumes in 1768, was intended to
supplement Robert Dodsley's popular six-volume collection of 1758 (in
fact, the morocco spine labels of the present set are numbered "Vol.
VII-X"). The poets represented include: Mr. Beatie, Dr. Goldsmith,
T[obias] Smollett M.D., Christopher Smart, William Falconer, William
Whitehead, Samuel Johnson, Richard Savage, Thomas Warton, Richard
Glover, etc., etc.

Exterior hinges a bit rubbed and tender but secure, wear to the
corners of the boards; one leaf in vol. iv with closed tear to the top
corner, two other leaves with a small piece of the top corner missing,
not affecting any text; otherwise contents are exceedingly clean and
fresh, handsomely bound. An appealing set. Engraved armorial
bookplates of Robert Whitle on the front paste-downs and contemporary
owner's signature (dated 1775) on the front flyleaves.
