"Ships & Rigging 1750 to the Clipper." A bound compilation of 18th-  
and early 19th-century engravings, clippings and printed extracts  
related to British ships and ship-building. Large 4to volume (27 x 21  
cm; 10.5" x 8.25") in half burgundy morocco over cloth boards with  
gilt-stamped titles on the front cover.
With ca. 36 pages of engraved plates, some colored, some folding (3  
quite large), illustrating different classes of ships, hulls, rigging,  
sails, anchors and buoys, ship construction, navigational instruments,  
etc., etc. Printed extracts (totaling ca. 100 pp.) include William  
Falconer's extensive entries on "Navigation, Marine Affairs, and Naval  
Architecture" from A General Dictionary of Arts and Sciences (1766).  
Scattered spotting and toning throughout, some browning and light  
dampstaining to the edges, a few plates with wear to the extremities  
from mis-folding. A spectacular and unique collection of nautical lore  
and illustrations.
