"Ships & Rigging 1750 to the Clipper." A bound compilation of 18th-
and early 19th-century engravings, clippings and printed extracts
related to British ships and ship-building. Large 4to volume (27 x 21
cm; 10.5" x 8.25") in half burgundy morocco over cloth boards with
gilt-stamped titles on the front cover.
With ca. 36 pages of engraved plates, some colored, some folding (3
quite large), illustrating different classes of ships, hulls, rigging,
sails, anchors and buoys, ship construction, navigational instruments,
etc., etc. Printed extracts (totaling ca. 100 pp.) include William
Falconer's extensive entries on "Navigation, Marine Affairs, and Naval
Architecture" from A General Dictionary of Arts and Sciences (1766).
Scattered spotting and toning throughout, some browning and light
dampstaining to the edges, a few plates with wear to the extremities
from mis-folding. A spectacular and unique collection of nautical lore
and illustrations.
