Caius Julius Caesar; Clement Edmonds: The Commentaries of C. Julius
Caesar, of his Warres in Gallia, and the Civile Warres betwixt him and
Pompey, Translated into English: with many excellent and judicious
Observations Thereupon: As also The art of our Modern Training, or,
Tactick Practise; by Clement Edmonds Esquire, Rememberancer of the
City of London. Whereunto is adjoyned The Eighth Commentary of the
Warres in Gallia; With some short Observations upon it. Together with
The Life of Cæsar, and an Account of his Medalls. Revised, Corrected,
and Enlarged. London: Printed by R. Daniel, and are to be sold by
Henry Tvvyford in Vine-Court Middle Temple, Nathaniel Ekins at the
Gunne in St. Paul’s Church-Yard, and Iohn Place at Furnivalls Inne
Gate in Holburn, 1655. Small folio (28 cm; 11.25 in) in early/period
mottled calf; [48] + 196 + [2] + 142 + 10 + [2 (final blank)] pp. With
an additional engraved title-page and fifteen engraved plates, most of
which are double-page. ESTC R17666; Wing C199.
A handsome example of an important and visually spectacular edition of
the Commentaries of Julius Caesar, complete with all the plates
depicting Caesar's armies, formations, encampments, battles, etc., in
fine condition, and Edmonds's extensive "observations" on the text.
With commendatory poems to Edmonds by Ben Jonson, William Camden,
Samuel Daniel, and Josuah Sylvester. Binding lightly worn and rubbed,
some cracking to the internal hinges and to the joints at the foot of
the spine but both boards are secure and sound; front blank flyleaf
and one page gathering (2 leaves of text), while still securely bound,
have partially separated from the text block at the lower gutter,
resulting in some shallow wear and soiling to the protruding edges;
contents with mild toning to the edges, occasional small spots,
otherwise very clean and fresh, firmly bound. Notes in English, Latin
and French on the front blank endpapers by a very early, or perhaps
the original, owner, who has also occasionally highlighted the margins
with rather abstract renderings of a pointing finger (see below); a
few pages (ca. 5 or 6) with the same owner's underlinings. Front paste-
down with the small bookseller's label of Blackwell's, Oxford.
