Helmont (1618-1699) was the son of natural philosopher Johannes
Helmont, and a physician in his own right. This work, on the Hebrew
language and the specific sounds of each Hebrew letter, is also an
early attempt to teach lip reading to deaf mutes by fancifully relating
the positions of the lips, tongue, etc. to the shapes of the letters in
the Hebrew alphabet (which he believed was the original language of
mankind).
