Hales (1677-1761) was an English clergyman who made major contributions
to a range of scientific fields including botany, pneumatic chemistry
and physiology. He invented several devices, including a ventilator, a
pneumatic trough and a surgical forceps for the removal of bladder
stones. The DNB describes this title as "second
only to those of Harvey in the inauguration of modern physiology". G&M
765 echoes this accolade, calling this title "the greatest single
contribution to the knowledge of the vascular system after Harvey, and
led to the development of the blood-pressure measuring instruments now
in universal use." See also Heirs of Hippocrates 494 ("his work gave .
the first quantitative estimates of blood pressure"), Notable Medical
Books, p. 109, Bibliotheca Osleriana 1081. Hales has a monument in
Westminster Abbey.

Our offering is volume II and is complete in itself (the preceding
title, "Vegetable Staticks", was first published in 1727). Presented in
a handsome full leather re-bind with gilt rules to the boards and spine,
and a morocco spine label. The endpapers have been re-newed. Contents
