An important paper describing numerous experiments conducted by Charles-Augustin de Coulomb (1736-1806), leading French physicist, after whom are named Coulomb's Law and the coulomb, a unit of measurement of electrical charge.

[RUMFORD'S SOUP KITCHEN & FURNACE] Notice sur les Soupes à la Rumford (illustrated). Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford (1753-1814) was an American expatriate who had fought on the Loyalist side during the Revolutionary War. A keen physicist and inventor, while in the service of Bavaria he devised Rumford Soup, an early attempt at cost-efficient nutrition for convicts and the poor. The present article describes the soup's constituents as well as a "fourneau [furnace] à la Rumford",  accompanied by a folding diagram.

A lengthy and important essay by Jean-Antoine Chaptal (1756-1832), leading chemist and popularizer of science, who applied the discoveries of science to industry and agriculture. In 1790 he coined the word nitrogen.
