FALKNER, W[M.] C[LARK]. THE LITTLE BRICK CHURCH, A NOVEL. Phila.: Lippincott, 1882. The rare first edition of this scarce novel. Wright III-1789 (1 copy): "Before and during the American Revolution." Original cloth stamped in gilt, just slight wear. Frontispiece. (Colonel Falkner, Wm. Faulkner's gt. grandfather, was a hot-blooded Mississippian whose youth is shrouded in tales of violence. A veteran of the Mexican War, he raised several Confederate regiments during the Civil War, holding at one time the rank of Colonel. He was murdered on the public square by a former business partner. As a youth Wm. Faulkner expressed the wish to emulate his novel-writing ancestor, "His influence on his gt. grandson named after him ... is immense." The character of Colonel Sartoris is drawn from Colonel Falkner.)
