Legendre (1752-1833) was Professor of Mathematics at Ecole Militaire and later at Ecole Normale. His "Theorie des Nombres" is still the standard work on the subject. "The first treatise devoted exclusively to the higher arithmetic, in which Lagrange's theory was simplified and extended.
