O'CASEY, Sean. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS). At the bottom of a letter
to O'Casey from Robert J. Lyons of the Lyons Theatre-News Service
requesting notes about his character Minnie Powell from his play THE
SHADOW OF A GUNMAN to be played by Susan Strasberg. His response: "I've
already sent a number of notes to play's Director--at his request. I
shouldn't venture instruction or suggestion (except by personal request)
3000 miles away from where rehearsals are. Susy Strasberg will, I'm
sure, give her own rendering of the part---as all great artists do, &
must do; and I'm sure she will show Minnie Powell to New York in a
fascinating way." SIGNED in full. Normal folds from mailing. Near Fine.

THE SHADOW OF A GUNMAN is a 1923 play set during the Irish War of
Independence. It centers on the mistaken identity of a building tenant
who is thought to be an IRA assassin. It is the first in O'Casey's
"Dublin Trilogy," the other two being JUNO AND THE PAYCOCK (1924) and
THE PLOUGH AND THE STARS (1926). (#014069) $1,000.00
