TITLE: “On the Theory and Practice of Art-Enamelling Upon Metals”

By Henry Cunynghame.
Published in Westminster by Archibald Constable & Co. in 1899.

DISCUSSION: The author, who had consulted numerous working enamellers as
well as the books of enamel craftsmen both living and dead from England
and the Continent, was himself a proficient enameller. His text includes a
long historical introduction concerning the history and development of
enamelling, and the nuts and bolts of executing Limoges enamels, Cloisonne
enamels, and the making of enamel colors. He notes in his Preface that the
development of modern manufacturing machinery has largely destroyed the
small handicraftsman, but that the field of enamelling provides a place
for the full-time craftsman or hobbyist to pursue a satisfying trade. Of
course, it was at precisely this time that the Art Nouveau and Liberty
schools of crafts were reviving the use of brightly colored enamels in
silver, jewelry and related pieces.

DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 5.5”x8”, xvi + 135 pages, with 6 black & white
illustrations, plus 2 color and 11 black & white plates.

CONDITION NOTES: The covers have some light wear and fading (please see
the photos, above and below). The book itself has some minor wear and
light soil, and a wobbly rear hinge which has been reglued, but otherwise
is clean and nice.
