MILLER, Henry. TO PAINT IS TO LOVE AGAIN. Alhambra, CA: Cambria Books,
(1960). First Edition. Original beige cloth boards decorated in blue.
Illustrated with 14 reproductions of watercolors by Miller. Shifreen &
Jackson A123a: Copy #9 of only 50 of the Special Edition. Rather than
being signed on the limitation page, this copy bears a SIGNED
INSCRIPTION by the author on the half-title page to his third wife:
"For/Lepska/from/Henry." In 1944, a decade after his divorce from his
second wife, June Mansfield, and his affair with Anais Nin, Miller
married a Polish immigrant and graduate student, Janina Martha Lepska.
Despite having two of his three children with Lepska, as she was known,
Miller's marriage collapsed in 1951 over disagreements about child
rearing and they were divorced the following year. The front free
endpaper, tellingly, contains a 1964 SIGNED INSCRIPTION by Lepska "To
Miss McBride/with admiration and gratitude." Fine in a Near Fine
dustwrapper with minor rubbing and edgewear. (#012007) $1,500.00
