WHEAT, Carl I. (1892-1966).

The Maps of the California Gold Region, 1848-1857. A Biblio-Cartography of an Important Decade.

San Francisco: The Grabhorn Press, 1942.

Folio. 14 1/4 x 9 3/4 inches. (154) pp. Title page printed in 3 colors, text printed in black and red, lists 323 maps printed about the California gold region from 1802 to 1858 with full descriptions of each, 26 facsimile plates of maps (17 folding, 10 color), indexes; text clean unmarked. Original two-toned cloth bindings, printed paper spine label, beveled edges; binding square and tight. Ex library copy with printed paper spine label, adhesive tape residue on the spine, stickers in the end papers, one small rubber stamp under the date on the title page, and pencil notations on the copyright page. Would rate this copy Very Good; the library markings are minimal and the text is clean and bright.

LIMITED EDITION of 300 copies in Janson linotype on machine made paper. Beginning with a list of 150 maps of the western slope of the Sierra Nevada and its gold camps, developed through research in California Libraries, the author expands the list to more than 300 from libraries throughout the United States and Europe. One of the Fifty Books of the Year. Reference: Magee and Magee, Bibliography of the Grabhorn Press, 1940-1956, No. 368.
