TITLE: "The Useful Arts and Manufactures of Great Britain"

Published in London by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, in
the 1840s.

DISCUSSION: The chapters of these books were evidently first published as
separate booklets, and each has its own pagination. They provide a very
detailed description of the various trades and manufactures, and are
illustrated with many woodcuts. These two volumes appear to comprise the
complete set of papers, and include- Glass; Pottery & Porcelain; Silk;
Copper & Tin; Brass Buttons; Hats; Coal Gas; Iron; Various steel trades,
including cutlery, cast iron, nails & screws, gun barrels, wire, needles
and files & saws; Paper; Leather; Parchment; Glue; Sugar; and the textile
trades including Cotton Yarn; Linen Yarn; Woollen Yarn; Woven Goods;
Calico Printing; and Dyeing.

DESCRIPTION: 2 volumes. 4.5”x7”, about 500 pages, many black & white
illustrations. Publisher’s brown embossed cloth with gilt titles.

CONDITION NOTES: Covers a bit rubbed and soiled (see photo); top third of
each blank endpaper excised (see photo below); some light internal
spotting, but overall in nice, good, tight, clean condition.
