TOOMER, Jean. ESSENTIALS. DEFINITIONS AND APHORISMS. Chicago: "Private
Edition", 1931. First Edition. Some copies of this book are numbered,
but most seem not to be, and only a very few of the numbered copies are
signed. The unnumbered copies were apparently remaindered, which
accounts for the glut of fine, fresh unnumbered copies in dustwrapper on
the market. This is copy #481 of 1000 SIGNED by the author. Additionally
this copy is INSCRIBED by him on the front free endpaper: "For Mildred
C. Green/Jean/Christmas '32/Portage." The author's second book. His
first book, the novel CANE, was the first book, and one of the greatest
books, of the Harlem Renaissance. Hard to find this title signed, even
moreso when inscribed by Toomer. The spine is evenly sunned, with the
sunning extending a little to the top of the rear cover. Near Fine,
lacking the dustwrapper. (#010718) $3,000.00
