TITLE: “The Apartments of Cosimo in Palazzo Vecchio”

By Ugo Muccini & Alessandro Cecchi.

DISCUSSION: In the 16th century the medieval nucleus of Palazzo Vecchio
was extended under Cosimo I, who commissioned the building and decoration
of the Apartments of Leo X and the Elements. The rich decoration in
fresco, panel paintings and stucco by Giorgio Vasari are artists of his
circle makes use of the perfect correspondence between the rooms of each
apartment, situated one above the other, to create a studied analogy
between famous members of the Medici family. The result is a magnificent
allegory, the main aim of which was to legitimize and glorify the power of
the Medici.

illustrations, dust jacket.
