Edited by Alfred Johnson.

DISCUSSION: “With [an] introductory text by Louis Bres and reminiscences
by Edouard Gaubert, translated and annotated by Alfred Johnson”. In the
days before photography marine painters enjoyed a fertile field, as almost
every ship owner, master or captain would want a picture of his ship or
ships for display. By the early 19th century entire families of artists
were sometimes employed in supplying this need, and the Rouxs of
Marseilles were one such family. This book includes the text of a very
rare pamphlet on the Roux artists written in 1883 by Louis Bres,
reproductions of many Roux ship watercolors gathered from America and
Europe, a reminiscence of the Roux shop by Edouard Gaubert, and notes by
Alfred Johnson.

DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 7.5”x10”, 270 pages, black & white plates.

CONDITION NOTES: Last pages with slight crease, but overall clean and
nice, with a tight binding and no marks.
