TITLE: “South Kensington Museum. Italian Sculpture of the Middle Ages and
Period of the Revival of Art. A Descriptive Catalogue of the Works Forming
the Above Section of the Museum, with additional Illustrative Notices”

By J.C. Robinson.
Published in London by Chapman and Hall in 1862.

DISCUSSION: An important and popular catalog which included a good survey
of Florentine sculpture, sections on Michelangelo and della Robbia, and
sculptural elements besides figural pieces, such as tombs, tabernacles and
chimney pieces.

This example is from the extra-illustrated edition, which, as Hamber notes
in ‘A Higher Branch of the Art’, “included up to twelve albumen prints...
curiously the photographs used for these extra-illustrated editions
frequently duplicated the existing line-engraved illustrations”.

DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 6.5"x10", xxxi + 192 pages, 20 lithographed plates
and 11 mounted albumen plates; publisher's extremely handsome full
gilt-stamped morocco; bookplate showing this was given as the Queen’s
Prize for Modeling from the Antique in the National Art-competition in
1866.

CONDITION NOTES: Covers with a little wear and rubbing; a little internal
soil; mounted plates quite nice and unfaded; with a tight binding.

PRICE: $250.00
