(AMERICANA) Newman, John B. TEXAS AND MEXICO IN 1846;Comprising the History of Both Countries, with an Account of the Soil, Climateand Production of Each. New York: J. K. Wellman. 1846. 8vo. 32pp. With thelarge folding map, hand colored in outline, with the colored American flagoverprinted on Texas. Orig. brown printed wrappers, stabbed & tied at innermargin. With the inscription on this copy at the top of the front wrapper,"John Kelly, Naugatuck, June 15, 1846." Some light chipping atfore-edge of rear wrapper, but an exceptionally fine copy with a fine map.        $7,500.00(trade discount allowed)
Rarefirst edition, containing the map detailing Texas and Mexico and "The Seatof the War." The author, a New York medical doctor and writer, wascritical of the annexation of Texas. See Howes (the final edition) N123;Eberstadt, TEXAS 162:567. Rader 2480. The owner of this copy, "John Kelly,"of Naugatuck, CT, was one of the Irish pioneers to this area; the southern endof Naugatuck was called "Kelly Hill" at this time.
