Gibbon, Edward, Esq. The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Four Volumes Complete Fifth American From the last London Edition. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1836. Four complete volumes, in full calf. red and black panels to spine with title and volume number, spines ridged. Gilt still bright, mild rubbing to "G" in Volume I, with upper corner of black panel showing volume number chipped, gilt intact. All volumes moderately rubbed, foxing throughout all volumes, text very readable, old previous owners signature in blue fountain pen with date of 1880 to each paste down. Vol. I., Advertisement to "The First Octavo Edition" (1783), Sketch of Author's life. Map fold out, mild toning, chip to lower margin 1/2 inch, "The Parts of Europe and Asia adjacent to Constantinople". Hinge is cracked with an old repair causing brown stains from remnants of old glue. Frontispiece, engraving of Gibbon, pulling at hinge, light foxing, tissue torn at edges. Second quire held by one thread. Old inked name to front paste down. Volume II. large fold out map, "Western Part of The Roman Empire,"l inch closed tear at seam, at fold 2 1/2 inch closed tear, pulled from gutter; Volume III, front map torn out, with small partial remnant; Volume IV. Table of particular references to the "Great Events," of the "First Crusade," Index. Fifth American from the last London Edition. Foxing throughout, from light to moderate; text very readable. Junius: Including Letters by the Same Writer, under other Signatures, (now first collected.) to which are added, His Confidential Correspondence with Mr. Wilkes, and his Private Letters addressed to Mr. H.S. Woodfall. With a Preliminary Essay, Notes, ... London: F.C. And J. Rivington; T. Payne; Wilkie and Robinson; Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, et al, 1814. Junius ( pseudonym) of English political author of unknown identity who wrote numerous letters to the London Public Advertiser from 1769 - 1772. He used gossip, scandal, and verbal attacks on King George III, and his ministry for their personal immorality or viciousness. Letters, centring on the John Wilkes controversy over the Middlesex election, were passionately conveyed by an opponent of the government familiar with secret government matters. Preliminary Essay by Lord George Sackville, From Junius to William Draper; short sketch of Draper's character; Lord Holland's Letter to H.S. Woodfall, vindicating himself as "the public defaulter of unaccounted millions; extracts from Burke's speech on American Taxes; on the pretensions of Charles Lloyd, John Robert, Samuel Dryer, John Wilke; Junius to Dr. Wm. Blackstone; retorts to letters written by Junius, etc. Five facsimile letters (fold-out), one plate of "Seals used by Junius". Plate II in volume I is cleanly torn from the second fold of the letter, the entire plate is in the book. Each volume solidly bound, very clean, bright text, few fox spots throughout 3 volumes, to margin. Three quarter brown contemporary calf, marbled boards, page ends, and end papers. Gilt decorations to spine, with five raised bands and black title panel with Junius in gilt, panel beneath name, volume numbers rubbed off. All edges rubbed, mild scuffing of boards. Volume II, closed tear spine edge, corner torn to title plate, title intact; f.e.p. loose from top, attached at lower end. Spine ends rubbed, each f.e.p. has previous owners name to verso. Second Edition, stated. Three presentable solidly bound editions. 588, 518, 510 (with Index), 8 vo. In clear protective wraps. Very Good  Scans on request
