Alllibone, Samuel Austin. . Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott & Co. And Childs & Peterson, 1858. Inscribed to L. Johnson Esq. by L. Austin Allibone, Phila., March 24, 1859, to f.e.p. Three volumes complete of this monumental work; thirty thousand biographies and literary notices, with forty indexes of subjects. Volume I published and dedicated to Childs & Peterson, 1858. Contains Preface and Introduction to Early English Literary History, and Chronological Tables of Prominent Authors and their Works, from A.D. 500 to A.D. 1850 and Some Directions for a Course of English Reading. (1005 pages). Few pale edge stains to title and facing pages. Volume II and III published and dedicated to J.P. Lippincott, Philadelphia 1870. Each volume has Old English lettering initials of previous owner to dedication and inscription page. Three quarto morocco, marbled, ridged spine, gilt title and numbering to spine. Red and blue marbled end papers and page ends. Rubbing of extremities and, Volume III lower corner well rubbed, 3/4 inch chip to lower spine, front board not attached. Clean bright text. 4to, over 6000 pages total. ALLIBONE, SAMUEL AUSTIN (1816-1889, Lucerne, Switzerland), American author and bibliographer, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on the 17th of April 1816, of French Huguenot and Quaker ancestry. Privately educated and engaged in mercantile business in his native city; however, devoted himself chiefly to reading and to bibliographical research. He acquired a profuse knowledge of English and American literature, and is best remembered as the compiler of the well-known Critical Dictionary of English Literature and British and American Authors. Allibone was book editor and corresponding secretary of the American Sunday School Union; from 1879 to 1888 he was Librarian of the Lenox Library, New York City. In addition to his Critical Dictionary he published three large anthologies and several religious tracts. (1813)
