SMITH, Samuel Francis. PHOTOGRAPH SIGNED. . Highly uncommon cabinet
photograph (4-1/3” x 6-1/2”) by Hardy photographers of Boston of the
author of the patriotic song "America" SIGNED "S.F. Smith" on the front.
With a stanza of "America" in Smith's hand and SIGNED "S.F. Smith" on
the verso: "My country, 'tis of thee,/Sweet land of Liberty,/Of thee I
sing./S.F. Smith/Feb. 1832,/Autograph written/Oct. 11, 1894." While
Smith in later years was very obliging in writing fair copies of his
poem for admirers (with the original and copy dates carefully noted),
this cabinet image with a stanza on verso may well be unique. Signature
on front just a touch light, but fully legible. Part of Smith's writing
on the back is over a printed area, but again it is fully legible. Light
area of loss near photographer's stamping on front. Near Fine. (#016237)
$2,000.00
