Samuel Langdon (1723-1797) was one of the Patriot Preachers of the American Revolution. He had been a Harvard classmate of Samuel Adams, and at the time he delivered this sermon he was President of Harvard College. The sermon condemns the use of British mercenaries and contains a contemporary account of the battles of Lexington and Concord and their aftermath, and also criticizes the excessive taxation imposed on the colonies.
