Two folio (9-1/4" x 15") volumes in contemporary calf, rebacked with
original spine preserved; [4], xii, [xxx], lviii, 261, [1], (409)-630,
699-873; [2], (1)-94, xcviii-c, 95-245, 236-279, [2], 278-402; 393-480,
[1], 466-663, [733]-931 pages. Illustrated with 37 engraved maps (10
double-page or folding) and 16 engraved plates (3 double-page or
folding). The expeditions related include excursions into the far
reaches of the world, as well as more leisurely tours of Europe. The
contributions are Henry Blount's Voyage into the Levant; The Voyages
Made into Turky, by Nicholas Nicholay, Daulphinois; The Preacher's
Travels across Asia to the East Indies; The Travels of Four Englishmen
and a Preacher into Africa, Asia, Troy, etc.; A Voyage to Mount Libanus:
Wherein Is an Account of the Customs and Manners, &c. of the Turks; by

Description of Surinam by George Warren. The maps include the World
(with California depicted as an island); North America (California again
an island), the East and West Indies; Asia, Europe, Africa, the
Mediterranean, and many other regions and areas of the world. The
engravings are mostly of European scenes, though there is a fine, large
folding plate of the city of Babylon. Despite the uneven pagination, the
book has been carefully collated and matches perfectly to the index.
Provenance: Sir Henry St. John-Mildmay (1787-1848), Dogmersfield Library
(bookplate). Some toning to the paper and an occasional small stain.
Near Fine and quite scarce.
Important compilation of voyages and travels from the 16th to 18th
centuries, many not previously published in England, compiled from Lord
Oxford's library by Thomas Osborne and considered to be a supplement to
Churchill's collection of voyages published in 1704. With the noteworthy
complement of 37 maps, 30 of which are by Herman Moll and 12 of which
relate to the Americas. Hill 295; Sabin 57765. It is also known as the
