[FILLMORE, Millard] BARNARD, J.G. and WILLIAMS, J. J. THE ISTHMUS OF
TEHUANTEPEC: BEING THE RESULTS OF A SURVEY FOR A RAILROAD TO CONNECT THE
ATLANTIC AND PACIFIC OCEANS, MADE BY THE SCIENTIFIC COMMISSION....
Millard Fillmore's Copy Signed by Him. New York: D. Appleton and
Company, 1852. First Edition. Octavo (6" x 9-1/4") bound in publisher's
green blind-stamped cloth, gilt lettering on the spine, 295 pages
(errata slip tipped in between pages 294 and 295). Illustrated with 14
tinted lithographs, one fold-out map, and a geological plated. After the
acquisition of California and the settlement of Oregon, there was a race
to find the fastest route to the Pacific. The Isthmus of Tehuantepec is
the narrowest point in the national territory of Mexico and prior to the
opening of the Panama Canal was a major shipping route known simply as
the Tehuantepec Route. SIGNED and dated "February 27, 1852" vertically
on the front pastedown by the thirteenth President of the United States
while in office. A few pencil markings in the margin, presumably by
Fillmore. Slight, occasional foxing. Near Fine. (#016463) $2,000.00
